Now that you have chosen your wedding invitation, you will need to decide what matching stationery pieces you will need. With so many items to choose from, it may seem like an overwhelming and costly challenge, but choosing the correct pieces will not only aid you in having a great wedding planning experience, but will also give your guests an occasion to remember. Here are the basic pieces & some lesser known ones with a brief description of their purpose.
Choosing your Wedding Stationery
- Response Card - Is included with each invitation and is a means for each guest to accept or decline the invitation to the wedding. It includes a space for the guest to write their names and the number of guests they will be bringing. A Response Card should date several weeks before the wedding, ensuring that you have enough time to notify your banquet hall of the number of attendees. Placing a stamp on the response card envelope will increase the percentage of response cards that you receive back.
- Reception Card - Is generally included with your invitation if the ceremony and the reception are being held in two different locations. The invitation would state the name and address of the ceremony, while the reception card would state the name and address of the reception hall.
- Accommodations Card - Is used to inform out-of-town guests of convenient lodgings, dining and amenities in the vicinity of the church and/or reception hall. You may want to include some rates at the local hotels and reservation numbers.
- Maps - Are custom designed to fit your needs. It may be a map for out-of-town guests to get from the airport to the hotel including a reservation phone number and rates of the rooms. It may be a map for guests to get from the church to the reception hall. We will do our best to design a map to suit your purpose.
- Directions Card - Is an alternative to a map, they are written in lieu of a diagram.
- Rainy-Day Card - If you are having an outdoor wedding, it is a good idea to include a rain card. The card would include such information as an alternate time and/or location of the ceremony in case of bad weather, and perhaps a phone number guests can call to confirm changes in time or location.
- Escort Cards - are displayed together on a separate table, usually in the foyer or on the receiving table. They would have the guest's name as well as the table number where they are to be seated.
- Place Cards - Are an alternative to Escort Cards. Read our article "Escort Cards vs. Place Cards"
- Table # Cards - Identify the table number to the guests, making it easy for them to seat themselves. They will know what table number they are to go to either by the seating chart or the escort cards that you have provided for them.
- Menus - In these times of great awareness and issues with food choices, a menu is almost a necessity to inform your guests of the meal choices you are offering. They can be used as individual place settings or as a framed display element on each table. If you are having a buffet-style dinner, a menu is not as necessary, but you may still want to offer a menu that lists the buffet choices & beverages being offered.
- Ceremony Programs - Serve the very important and practical purpose of providing the invited guests with a basic idea about the order of the Wedding Events. It also ensures the delivery of perfect details of the people, times and locations of the various events to unfold at the wedding ceremony.
- Save-the-Date Cards - Are used to notify out-of-town guests of the date or your wedding, well in advance. This allows guests sufficient time to make travel and accommodation arrangements. Save-the-date card information may vary depending on what you need to let your guests know. You may have only the date chosen and not the location, you may have made special arrangements with a local hotel for discounted rates, etc. A formal invitation should still be sent when all the final arrangements have been made.
- Announcement Cards - Are a notification of your marriage to people who are not being invited to the ceremony or the reception. Often budget or banquet hall restrictions will disclude people from your invitation list. An announcement card is a nice way to let them know that you are getting or have gotten married.
- Thank You Cards - Wedding thank you cards are one of the most dreaded tasks of a wedding. Most people get stumped on what to say, particularly when you don't know the person well. Make it easy on yourself by ordering a standard card with a warm note of your choice and some blank space for you to personalize.
- Within-the-Ribbon or Pew Cards - Are used to indicate to honored guests that they are to be seated in a special section near the front of the church in reserved pews that have ribbons or cords placed over the ends. Each card would have the pew number along with instructions to the guest to present their card to the ushers. They can be included with the invitations or sent to the guest after they have responded with an acceptance to the wedding.
